Your selected question

Q:

How long does it take for a sterling cheque to clear in my account?

A:

All sterling cheques are cleared as part of a two business day cycle.

Cheques normally clear one working day after you pay them in. So if you pay a cheque in on Monday (before 3.30pm) it will usually clear by Tuesday. However, if your cheque is returned unpaid by the payer's bank (ie the bank of the person who wrote the cheque) you'll receive notification either in a letter or through Bankline.

This clearing cycle doesn't apply to foreign cheques, which can take up to 20 weeks to clear.

Cheques paid in at some financial institutions or agents (eg the Post Office) may take longer to arrive at the other bank for payment.
